1702: The Islamic Republic of Iran: Intelligence and Counterintelligence, Terrorism and Geopolitical Issues in the Modern Age

This is the second in a series of unclassified, Iran-focused courses, sponsored by the Iran Cadre Program. The odyssey of learning that began in Fundamentals of Iran 1701: History of Iran from Persia to Modern Times continues with Fundamentals of Iran 1702: The Islamic Republic of Iran: Intelligence and Counterintelligence, Terrorism, and Geopolitical Issues in the Modern Age.

Course 1702 arms participants with basic knowledge to understand security threats to our nation from the Islamic Republic of Iran and to analyze the Islamic Republic of Iran's relationship with organizations like Hezbollah, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and the FARC, as well as with multiple nations with diverse interests, connections, and agendas.

Key areas of focus in this course are:

  • Contemporary Iranian Issues: Politics, Culture, Society, and Economy
  • Insights into the Islamic Republic of Iran's geopolitical issues
  • Introduction to Hezbollah
  • The Islamic Republic of Iran's role in terrorism, including state-sponsored terrorism proxies and terrorist allies.
  • Islamic Republic of Iran's intelligence and security agencies (organization, missions, modus operandi, targeting efforts at home and abroad)

Discussions provide insight on America's once close alliance with Iran and the devolving relationship signaled most notably by the hostage taking crisis of 1979. Our continuing adversarial relationship is highlighted with insights into the Islamic Republic of Iran's support to insurgents in the current Iraqi war, the country's quest for nuclear weapons, and the volatile political climate in the wake of the contested summer of 2009 presidential elections and the popular Green Movement opposing the election results.
